A Community Wildlife Program

Mission Statement

Bear With Us is a program consisting of a group of volunteers in the Mammoth Lakes area that provide help to steward our bears and wildlife in returning to and surviving in the wild. Our priority is to have every resident, business owner, town, county and Forest Service employee work together to keep our wildlife away from humans and the waste we create and deposit in our trash cans and dumpsters, and develop a desire to live their lives and raise their offspring in the wild eating the natural resources.

We encourage the development of a program employing the world-renowned services of our resident bear specialist, Steve Searles, in educating the guests and residents of our community about the practices necessary to keep our local bears out of our dumpsters, homes and cars and unnecessarily killed because of their food hunting behaviors. These behaviors have been learned due to human negligence and it is the responsibility of humans to correct it. We will be working toward providing the tools and supplies necessary for Steve Searles to conduct this work.

We are developing fundraising events to support this mission, as well as following the progress of current negotiations taking place in developing a bear program for Mammoth Lakes. Additionally we are taking steps to monitor compliance practices of businesses, multi-family dwellings and private residences in keeping dumpsters covered and locked at all times. The biggest step toward getting our bears back into the wild is to eliminate their habitual food sources in town and in campgrounds.

It’s just time for someone to step up to the plate.
